One Big Reason Why I'm Politically Detached

I can be a good American and a good Catholic at the same time. At least, I don't think they've made it impossible for the two aspects of my life to coexist, yet. However this is one of those cases in which the fact that A and B are true does not demonstrate a relationship between the two. Certainly not a close one. My Catholicity requires me, in a certain sense, to be a good citizen. But there are limits to that mandate, and that Catholicity could just as easily require me to be a very bad citizen. As it has been said, an unjust law is no law at all - ergo the tenacity of my patriotism is directly correlative to the extent to which my country pursues justice in her legislation.

Given how un-guaranteed that correlation is, I say much the same thing in my own mind as Leah says here:

"I don’t particularly like it when Catholic churches have American flags up near the altar or sing “God Bless America” for the recessional hymn on the Fourth of July.  The Church isn’t opposed to this country, but it’s not supposed to be too tightly linked or loyal to any."

True that, Leah. True that.
